Athletics

Move every day. Compete if you want to. Always be part of the team.

Athletics at a Glance

At TJ, every student gets moving.

Athletics are built into the school day for students in grades 7–12. Some students compete for the Titans in soccer, volleyball, or basketball. Others choose fitness and noncompetitive activities such as tennis, yoga, hiking, or weight training.

You do not have to arrive at TJ as an experienced athlete to participate. Students can learn a sport for the first time, develop skills alongside more experienced teammates, or find another way to be active.

All students in grades 7–12 can participate in TJ team sports.

There's More Than One Way to Be Active

Not every student wants competition, and at TJ athletics are built with that in mind.

Students can choose from noncompetitive physical activities, with offerings changing throughout the year. Depending on the season, that might mean tennis, yoga, fitness, hiking, or working out in TJ’s training facility.

The goal is simple: everyone has time in the day to move, build strength, get outside, and step away from the classroom for a while.

Sports Facilities

Outdoor Facilities
Our soccer field and five (5) tennis courts see lots of action during the fall and spring seasons.
Gymnasium
TJ’s gym was built in 1952 on the plans of famed local architect William Bernoudy (a student of Frank Lloyd Wright) and is known in engineering and design circles for its spectacular lamella roof system. The building has been renovated and expanded in recent years. This includes the maple basketball floor that carries our motto, ἀρετή, the Greek word for “human excellence.” This is the rallying cry for all of TJ’s teams. Each year our gym is the host venue for tournaments and other athletic events.
Training Facility
Adjoining the gym is an annex containing team rooms and a light-filled workout room with weight machines and other training and fitness equipment. The room also serves as a dance and yoga studio.
